Four Faces Of A Leader I “Seer”
If you tether a young elephant to a stake, he will grow up assuming he cannot move beyond a small circle. He may become very large and strong but in his mind he will be limited. I’ve always done it this way. I’m not making this up. This information comes straight out of James A. Belasco’s fascinating management book titled “Teaching the Elephant to Dance”. Seeing new possibilities is the hallmark of the face of a SEER. SEER is really an Old Testament word that shows up some 25 times in people like Samuel and Amos. Today we call them visionaries. Those who can see what others miss.
So let’s have a conversation about what God might want to shake up in your current situation. What fresh possibilities does he want to open for your future? What new wine is God wanting to pour into your life? I’m excited about the Asbury Outpouring, the movie, The Jesus Revolution and the power of hope we saw in prayer for Damar Hamlin. These are signals that God is up to something. I suggest that we turn the nob of our expector to wide open.
Here are four questions to ask yourself in preparation for the new wine God wants to pour into your life and his church.
What are you doing that’s right?
Affirm it and ramp it up.
What are you doing that’s wrong? Change it. Succeeding in things that don’t matter can set us back more than failure.
What are you doing that’s confusing?
Clarify it. Often a simple tweak is the answer.
What is missing? Add it. The Apostle Peter instructs us as Christ followers to add to our faith things like knowledge, self-control, perseverance, kindness and love.
Then he promises if we add the right things they will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive.
Someone once ask Helen Kellner, “Is there anything worse than being blind?” This marvelous woman replied, “Yes, to have sight but no vision”. That says it all!
This concludes our series on the Four Faces of a Leader as a caring Shepherd, a willing Servant, a competent Steward and a visionary Seer. I’ll be back next week with another topic.
And that’s Hope on the Rise for now!!
